As you may know, we write a regular page in the Arsenal matchday programme which comprises unusual stories from the club’s past which, usually, have been long forgotten about. Most of them tend to be older stories as the last 20 years has seen the internet report on every time a player farts and keeps it for posterity for ever more.

The programme for Saturday’s game against Manchester City was dedicated to Arsene Wenger’s 1000 games in charge of Arsenal. We thought it would be nigh on impossible to find a story about Arsene that no one would have tweeted, facebooked (if such a word exists) or blogged about. But we were wrong. Andy dug deep into the darkest corners of his memory banks and recalled a story of human kindness and compassion that he was sure would soften the heart of even the most ardent WOBite.

Behold, Arsene Wenger – The Good Samaritan. This cutting below was published in the Islington Gazette on 15 May 1997 and tells the story of Arsene’s journey to work on 8 May (click on the picture to open up in full size).
