Back in September 2014 we wrote a blog about Arsenal’s reserves beating Tottenham’s first team in 1970. Most Arsenal fans already knew about the time this happened in 1980.
However, at the recent Arsenal Supporters’ End of Year Event, whilst we were chatting to Martin Hayes he reminded us of yet another time that Arsenal’s reserves beat Tottenham’s first team. This game took place on 29 March 1983. The teamsheet is shown below, and that is how the teams lined up.

Former Arsenal apprentice Gary Lewin had been loaned in from Barnet as George Wood was the only fit goalkeeper at the club. None of the Arsenal players had any international caps, in fact most of them had no first team experience. It really was boys against men.
The Tottenham Weekly Herald tried to blame the defeat on the Highbury pitch and the swirling wind.

Your football club is supposed to represent its area, tottenham hotspur represents TOTTENHAM hotspur, and you are called arsenal, wheres arsenal i cant find it on my map, oh wait, there is a place called WOOLWICH arsenal, so you represent woolwich, so your name should be woolwich arsenal, and not the name of armaments, so we are the only north london team, you squatters.

Unlike Tottenham where only 2% of the local residents attend games and the club threatened to move out of the borough if the local council didn’t commit to regenerate the local area.
That was all a ploy mate, we were always going to stay, but we used our business brains, and got what we needed from council, railway access, and road access for our many many thousands of fans, that will be filling our new 61,000 stadium, and it will be the best stadium in england.
You miss the point though mate, im talking about your name, arsenal, when it should be arsenal as your 2nd name, woolwich arsenal is your name, yes you have moved from woolwich, but that is still your name, there is no arsenal in london, and you shouldnt be called it, its like say, if spurs did move to stratford, we would still be called tottenham hotspur, as this was our original club name, and our identity, and you should be doing the same, the birth of your club was called woolwich arsenal, that is your identity.

Andy we were originally called hotspur f.c, i see what you are saying, but we quickly changed to tottenham, because that is where we played, and it was right to do so, as you should change also, i refer to your team as woolwich arsenal, and you can call us hotspur f.c, doesnt bother me.

Pete, I think you will find that they changed their name because there was already a much more renowned team called Hotspur FC. And it wasn’t exactly “quickly”, it was 2 years later. So, can you point me in the direction of the area of Middlesex called Hotspur between 1882 and 1884?

With the way we run our club, we will struggle against the 2 sugar daddie clubs, and the other club with so much worldwide income manure, who are really in debt by the way, and you cant spend the same amount as them either, and without top 4, we will start to see spurs and arsenal as more equal, and see some great derby games, we beat you now, so imagine what it will be like when you dont have your superstars anymore, you will be very quiet on the forums then, lets compare players our best player last season was kane, a player we developed, a spurs supporter playing for his team, and eriksen who can be great at times, but missing in others, and of course theres lloris, the rest were good, and some were really bad, now look at your team, nearly all your players are better than most of ours, because we cant give them the wages you can, so you have your advantage there, yet we gave you a hard 1-1 at your place, and beat you at the lane, now when we spend the same amount on wages as you, we will overtake you, look what we are doing now with half your money outlay, so dont get silly, yes you have a stronger squad than us, and you finished higher than us again, but when you cant spend to stay ahead of us, with no top 4 lure, our strong academy and stars will start to take over north london, its home, from the woolwich arsenal squatters, as was always going to happen.

It was a reserve game – So Arsenal Reserves beat Spurs Reserves.
7 days late Spurs beat Arsenal 5-0 in a Division 1 league game. The team was: Team: Clemence; Hughton, O’Reilly; Roberts, Miller, Gibson, Mabbutt, Archibald, Galvin, Brazil, Falco.
So either Arsenal Reserves beat Spurs First team 2-1 but then their First team lost 5-0 to Spurs Reserve team, or Arsenal Reserves beat Spurs reserves and Arsenal First team got thumped by Spurs First Team? Which is it pal? Either way, why are you even blogging it? I’d be embarrassed to call myself a Gooner.

Tell you what, write a blog about Arsenal’s first team getting turned over by Tottenham’s reserves and I’ll publish it on here. Can’t say fairer than that, can I?
Don’t really get the whole lording it over Spurs thing and stuff like this isn’t even mildly amusing. They are so inferior to us I don’t see why they are even a secondary thought. Maybe in the 70’s they were important to us, but seriously, the comparison now is like comparing us to Stoke. We’re miles ahead, have a trophy count that absolutely dwarfs them. They are irrelevant in what we want to achieve. Rivalry, yes – but personally, I’ll be rooting for them to beat the likes of Chelsea & Man City next season because they are our true rivals. Couldn’t give a monkeys if Spurs win or lose, they are insignificant in our ambitions.
That would sound more viable if ArseAnal hadn’t just squeaked past Spurs by one point under very, very dodgy circumstances several times in the last decade.
Your trophy haul dwarfs ours: How many genuine, serious European trophies have you won? Some folk would consider the real mark of a big club to be success in Europe.

Do a full match report on what happened 7 days after this game, when Spurs first team played Arsenals first team in a proper league game.
I was going to say the same thing, it’s a pity for them that they didn’t play their reserves in that game too!
